The business of internet dating. Indian love: We just clicked. Love plus one. Those words from Eli Finkel, associate professor of social psychology at the Northwestern University in Chicago, are likely to ring true with any online daters still to find love on the web. Yet with Valentine’s Day often bringing out the worst snuggly excesses of loved-up couples, both in public and on websites like Facebook, singletons may well find themselves tempted to give one of the many online dating sites a try in an attempt to find The One.

We tend to like people who like us — a basic human trait that psychologists have termed “reciprocity of attraction. Yet, making the chase harder also has its upsides. Which one then is the better strategy for finding a partner? A team of researchers from the University of Rochester and the Israeli-based Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya examined the effects of playing hard to get, a mating strategy that is likely to instill a certain degree of uncertainty.

In a new study, published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships , they show that making the chase harder increased a potential mate’s desirability. While playing hard to get is a common strategy used to attract mates, past research has been unclear about whether, and if so, why this strategy works — which this study sought to clear up. Of course, some are reluctant to employ this strategy, worrying that it’ll backfire and drive prospective partners away out of fear of being rejected.

Bayesian molecular dating is widely used to study evolutionary timescales. This procedure usually involves phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequence data, with fossil-based calibrations applied as age constraints on internal nodes of the tree. An alternative approach is tip-dating, which explicitly includes fossil data in the analysis. This can be done, for example, through the joint analysis of molecular data from present-day taxa and morphological data from both extant and fossil taxa.

In the context of tip-dating, an important development has been the fossilized birth—death process, which allows non-contemporaneous tips and sampled ancestors while providing a model of lineage diversification for the prior on the tree topology and internal node times.

Her research currently focuses on online dating, including a study that found that age was the only reliable predictor of what made online daters more likely to actually meet up.

Where online dating differs from methods that go farther back are the layers of anonymity involved. If you meet someone via a friend or family member, just having that third-party connection is a way of helping validate certain characteristics about someone physical appearance, values, personality traits, and so on.

A survey of married Americans finds that one third met online and that their marriages do just as well as the marriages of the rest. Millions of people first met their spouses through online dating. But how have those marriages fared compared with those of people who met in more traditional venues such as bars or parties?

Now, any good general will tell you every battle requires a sound strategy. Similarly, many people employ their own strategies and approaches when it comes to attracting and chatting up that special someone. But, does playing hard to get really work? While many of us probably have our own personal successes and failures with the hard-to-get approach, modern science is finally ready to weigh in on the debate. Birnbaum and Reis have spent a number of years investigating the intricacies of human attraction and courtship.

Moreover, even if it is a surefire way to find a Friday night date , why is it so universally effective? So, to answer those questions they set up three inter-connected experiments. The experiments produced a number of interesting conclusions. Finally, participants who were assigned to the hard to get profiles tried much harder to convince the person they were speaking with to talk or see them again in the future. Going overboard while playing hard to get can cause the other person to see you as unapproachable or even unattractive.

There must be some hope of reciprocation and courtship in the future. Like studies? Follow us on Facebook!

Evolutionary Genomics pp Cite as. Bayesian methods for molecular clock dating of species divergences have been greatly developed during the past decade. Advantages of the methods include the use of relaxed-clock models to describe evolutionary rate variation in the branches of a phylogenetic tree and the use of flexible fossil calibration densities to describe the uncertainty in node ages.

The advent of next-generation sequencing technologies has led to a flood of genome-scale datasets for organisms belonging to all domains in the tree of life. Thus, a new era has begun where dating the tree of life using genome-scale data is now within reach. In this protocol, we explain how to use the computer program MCMCTree to perform Bayesian inference of divergence times using genome-scale datasets.

We use a ten-species primate phylogeny, with a molecular alignment of over three million base pairs, as an exemplar on how to carry out the analysis. We pay particular attention to how to set up the analysis and the priors and how to diagnose the MCMC algorithm used to obtain the posterior estimates of divergence times and evolutionary rates. Springer Nature is developing a new tool to find and evaluate Protocols. Learn more. The molecular clock hypothesis, which states that the rate of molecular evolution is approximately constant with time, provides a powerful way to estimate the times of divergence of species in a phylogeny.

Several statistical inference methodologies have been developed for molecular clock dating analyses; however, during the past decade, the Bayesian method has emerged as the method of choice [ 4 , 5 ], and several Bayesian inference software packages now exist to carry out this type of analysis [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. In this protocol, we will explain how to use the computer program MCMCTree to estimate times of species divergences using genome-scale datasets within the Bayesian inference framework.

Bayesian inference is well suited for divergence time estimation because it allows the natural integration of information from the fossil record in the form of prior statistical distributions describing the ages of nodes in a phylogeny with information from molecular sequences to estimate node ages, or geological times of divergence, of a species phylogeny [ 6 , 11 ].

It is important to understand users’ dating preferences in order to make better recommendations on potential dates. We study how users’ online dating behaviors correlate with various user attributes using a real-world dateset from a major online dating site in China.

Our study provides a firsthand account of the user online dating behaviors in China, a country with a large population and unique culture.
